It is shocking to know that there are about ten people who die from smoking every single minute, and nobody seems to have any idea about it. Indeed, there is â€Å"a growing gap between the real world and the academy† since people are more intellectual about things that are irrelevant to the real life and are ignorant of things that are imperative to live in the real world (Orr 310). Did you know that there are over four hundred thousand deaths caused by cigarettes and tobacco each year in the U.S. alone? That makes it about five million deaths worldwide each year, according to â€Å"Statistics about Smoking.† Smoking is notorious for causing avoidable diseases and deaths, and yet not many institutions have develop an appropriate system to†¦show more content†¦They should be able to help teens learn the ugly truth about tobacco, know what goes in a cigarette, and also say â€Å"No!† to smoking. While peer pressure is accountable for provoking teenag ers to smoke just for the sake of it, advertisement is more responsible for initiating young adults to just puff their lives away for acceptance. According to Martin, about eighty percent of American advertising executives believe that advertising is very effective because it makes smoking more appealing and socially acceptable to children. The tobacco industry is making billions and billions while hundreds of thousand are getting hooked on tobacco through the use of advertisements and media ploys. Advertising is by far the most effective and prominent way tobacco companies use to induce young adults. To successfully combat smoking or to eliminate tobacco companies altogether, hopefully sometime soon in the future, an ideal student must learn to recognize and to resist the many elements tobacco companies use in advertisement to hook young adults. Obedience above all In his article The Perils of Obedience†, Stanley Milgram conducted an experiment to determine if the innate desire to obey an authority figure overrides the morality and consciousness that had been already established in a person. After Milgram conducted his experiments he concluded that 60% of the subjects complied to an authority figure rather than their own sympathy. There was additional testing outside the US which showed an even higher compliance rate. Milgram reasoned that the subjects enjoyed the gratification from the experimenter, who was the authority figure in the experiment. He noted that most of the subjects are proud to carry out the demands of the experimenter. When the voltages increased, the learner will cite about their heart issues in order to invoke a sympathetic response in the teacher meanwhile the experimenter is pushing the teacher to continue the experiment. Most teachers, at this point, would often get into an argument with the experimenter and would contemplate with their own morality whether or not to continue the experiment. The experiment is stopped when the teacher refuses to continue or the teacher has reached the maximum amount of voltage possible. Milgrim first tested his experiments on Yale students. Milgrams hypothesis stated that most of the teachers would not go beyond 150 volts (only 4%), as their consciousness would intervene. The results of Milgrams first experiment was far from his prediction. When Milgram performs his first test on Yale students, many argued that the students were too competitive and aggressive the results wouldnt be accurate for the majority. Milgrim further expanded his subject pool to middle-class adults, white collar, and industrial workers. He found that all of the groups held identical results with the Yale students, with 60% of the subjects complying all the way to 450 volts. Leadership Persuasive Essay Leadership comes in many different forms but they all are heading toward the same goal; and that is to communicate with people. Some people are silent leaders and lead by example some are more vocal. Nevertheless, whatever type of leader you are, there are certain criteria that must be met. For example being a good role model, being dependable, being trust worthy, these are all things that a true leader must possess. However, all leaders have their strengths and weakness and these are a few areas in which men and woman striving to become leaders often have trouble dealing with. All to often leaders become over defensive and it beings to tear away at the seams of a cohesive unit. A little defensiveness is healthy self-protection like your immune system. Excessive defensiveness will prevent you from learning from your mistakes after all, why do anything different, if all your mistakes are someone elses fault? Feeling angry because of changes imposed from above? Attack the stupidity of your bosses and you will feel better! This move can be self-defeating if it stops you from understanding their rationale and coming to terms with your own resistance to change. If you have healthy self-esteem, you should be able to admit your mistakes if you have low self-esteem you will either be too hard on yourself for even small mistakes, or you will overreact and defensively never admit them! When you anticipate the failure of one of your projects, do you start telling people why it will fail? You are setting up your defenses in advance so you will not have to create them after the fact. Advance defensiveness can even facilitate failure. Some people will even sabotage their own projects, when they start to think they will fail, if they can do so in a way that ensures their getting off the hook. Recognizing and avoiding your own excessive defensiveness is not easy if you have developed a pattern of protecting a fragile self esteem in this way. However, you will not keep up with the demand in todays competitive market to learn faster if you do not confront this issue for yourself. Assertiveness you may think you are assertive just because you rant and rave at times. Maybe you often give in to others, kidding yourself that you are just being reasonable. So how can you say no to your boss or others without incurring their wrath? Say Yes, but and find a way to help others get what they want without you doing it! On the other hand, you negotiate priorities. Which crisis do they want handled first? A flat no is always confrontational even if not expressed aggressively. Being assertive just means speaking firmly about how you feel about a situation. It is less confrontational to refer to YOUR feelings rather than the others behavior. The other party as an attack may experience arguing even if you speak gently. You can be assertive simply by asking questions making statements is more confrontational if you are trying to make a point, ask questions to lead the other party to your conclusions. Emphasizing areas of agreement before discussing differences defuses conflict and confrontation Assertiveness getting the words and the balance just right takes a lot of practice. Practice works best with frequent feedback from someone you trust. You need to be assertive to keep yourself from sliding into burnout due to excessive stress. Immigration has led to stiff competition especially in the routine producers and in person servers groups, who are losing their jobs because of the extremely low wages being offered, but accepted by immigrants. Reich (295) predicts that the U.S labor force will comprise even more immigrants in the future. With the consequences of immigration labor, the uneven income and wealth distribution will further widen.
